I love the look of maxi dresses, but I can never find the right one for me. (I’m only 5″2.) They’re either too short, too long, or too clingy. Any suggestions on finding the perfect maxi?

I’ve gotten this question a lot lately, so here’s my tried-and-true advice for maxi dresses. (Coming from a girl who is not particularly tall and avoids clingy fabrics at all costs.)
- For ladies 5″4 and under, hemming the skirt length is a quick solve, but what if certain details or embellishment prevent you from doing so? This is where I head to stores that offer the same beautiful options in petite or short sizes, like Loft, J.Crew, Banana Republic, and Anthropologie. No tailoring involved, same great style.
- When shopping for maxi dresses, I also consider the shoe styles I’ll most likely pair them with. If the maxi calls for gladiator or t-strap sandals, I might stick with a dress that has a shorter hemline, especially since everything from midis to maxis are in this summer. Dressier options work well with heels or wedges, so as long as I’m not tripping over the hemline, I forego alterations and gain inches with my footwear.
- And here’s a secret I swear by when it comes to clingy fabrics: Wear a slip. I know, I know – many of you probably haven’t worn a slip since fifth grade – but a wispy thin half slip will be a major stylesaver on multiple occasions. It doesn’t add bulk, yet it hides underwear lines and acts as a barrier between you and thinner fabrics, smoothing everything out without the discomfort of Spanx. And bonus points for keeping things modest in bright sunlight.
Good luck with the hunt, Heather, and let me know what you find!
