the style letters will feature a new interview each month on seasonal fashion and favorite trends, all from the perspectives of some very stylish ladies.
This month, designer and social media maven Farah brightens up the city with her colorful summer looks and gives us her style “rules” for the season.

As the days become brighter and filled with outdoor activities, the more we want to celebrate with color and show off some skin — especially here in the Midwest, where hot sunny days are in limited supply. To me, it has always been important to celebrate a sunny day in comfort and style with easy-to-wear items that are perfect for when you’re on the go.
My sister Annie and I have been designing a resort line under the name of Chajin Designs since 2006; it’s an innovative brand that has influences of our Panamanian culture. It all initially started with us making handcrafted accessories such as earrings, bracelets, and necklaces made entirely from natural materials in vibrant colors and ethnic designs. As the brand grew, it also evolved into a lifestyle brand of accessories and clothing that is perfect for summer!
Brighten your day with some of my favorite summer trends:
I like to mix up old and new with exotic accents that are unique, such as this high-waisted mullet skirt in an indigenous print with a retro-vintage style swimwear top. Perfect for a day at the beach or a pool party gathering.
I love wearing knee-length dresses! Colorful ones are my favorite because you can easily dress them up with simple accessories for a feminine look.
Pretty in Pink
Shoe-flirting is always fun with trendy wedges; they are super comfortable and great for outings in grass areas. No need to worry that your heels will get stuck in the fields while attending summer festivals. Plus, they pair up great with a dress or pants.
The Hand Gear
I like to be prepared and have a bag or clutch that can carry my lifestyle — everyday items from a magazine to read on the train to a shawl in case it gets chilly or even an umbrella in case of sprinkles. You can never be too prepared in this city and should do it with fun arm candy that highlights your outfit.
A few style “rules” for summer:
- Big. Bold. Color. Accessories with a pop of color always makes for an excellent statement piece.
- Complement, don’t complicate your style.
- Less is more. Stay cool on these warm summer days by dressing in breathable flowing fabrics like cotton and linen. It is probably best to avoid dark colors since they tend to absorb more of the sun and can leave you looking like a hot mess at the end of the day.
Thank you, Maria, for having me be part of the Style Views!

Farah, you wear color so well! Love these summer brights. (Especially with all the rain in Chicago lately.)
