Dear Maria,

I’m a little nervous to try the crop top this spring. What are some “safe” ways to wear one?

Hi Cara!

Great question. Crop tops aren’t for the faint of heart, but there are ways to wear them without showing too much skin. (Or any at all, if you layer it!) This season, it’s all about proportion, so here are my tips for the long and short of it.

Crop Tops 101:
There are two ways to style this trend: on its own, or as a layering piece.

  • The key to going bare is limiting your exposure – an inch of midriff, max. I prefer to pair shorter tops with high-waisted pencil skirts or trousers. Play with scale here: a fitted crop top feels so romantic with a full midi skirt, while a boxy silhouette works well with a slim cigarette pant or mid-rise denim.
  • Not everyone is comfortable showing skin – and that’s ok, especially in a professional setting. Layer a crop top over a tailored button-down and looser pants or a straight skirt. An added bonus? This creates an illusion of length, which is great news for us shorter girls!
